Telnyx Number Lookup at Scale: Filter, Cache and Troubleshoot
Checking one number by hand is easy. Running lookups across a campaign list raises different questions: which fields do you need, how fresh must they be, what does each request cost and how will you explain a failed call afterward?
Request only fields with a downstream use
Separate a basic eligibility check from optional identity or caller-name enrichment. A workflow that only routes mobile and landline records may not need every available data field. Telnyx’s current Identity documentation describes its lookup products; check the endpoint response and price details in your account before processing volume. Don’t assume lookup data proves consent, ownership or that a recipient will answer.
Batch before dialing and record the result
Run checks before a campaign starts, save the response timestamp and retain the fields the campaign actually uses. Define when to refresh a cached result based on number type, your risk tolerance and provider guidance. Avoid checking the same record on every retry unless the workflow needs fresh data.
Use carrier data as a clue, not a verdict
Compare failed calls by destination carrier, call time, route and response code. A cluster may point to a route or network issue, but carrier data alone cannot tell you why a recipient’s phone labeled a call as spam. Check the voice provider’s call detail records and the telephony provider’s logs together.
For number purchasing, distinguish search inventory from number lookup. Telnyx’s number search guide explains capability filters and advises reviewing per-number cost details. Keep lookup and purchase decisions separate, and validate any regulatory or consent requirements before you dial.
