STIR/SHAKEN, Caller ID and “Spam Likely” Labels

A legitimate call can still arrive with a spam warning. STIR/SHAKEN addresses caller ID authentication on participating IP networks. It does not certify that a call is wanted, lawful or likely to be answered, and it does not dictate every handset’s spam label.

What attestation says

The originating provider signs information about the caller ID and its relationship to the customer placing the call. The three common attestation levels reflect what the provider can verify about the caller and its right to use the number. The FCC explains those levels in its caller ID authentication materials. Attestation is a statement from the provider, not a caller quality score.

Spam analytics use more signals

Carriers and device apps can use call patterns, complaints, recipient behavior, number history and other signals. STIR/SHAKEN can help authenticate a number while a separate analytics system still labels a high-volume or unwanted pattern. That is why changing a script alone may not change the label.

Build a traceable calling identity

Use numbers you control and configure caller ID through your provider. Keep customer and campaign records accurate, honor opt-outs, use expected calling patterns and monitor answer, rejection and complaint trends. Avoid rapid number rotation to evade labels; it can undermine trust and complicate troubleshooting.

When a label appears, collect the destination carrier, calling number, call time and provider call ID. Ask your voice provider to inspect authentication and route data, and follow its process for correcting inaccurate identity records. STIR/SHAKEN is one part of caller identity; it is not a guarantee against unwanted-call labels or a substitute for consent and calling rules.
