Buying a Twilio Number for an AI Voice Agent (Area Code Isn't Cosmetic)

Watch on YouTube ↗

Before any AI agent can make or receive a call, something has to own the phone number and the connection to the telephone network. That's Twilio's job in this stack: it's the phone company layer, not the AI layer, and getting it wrong quietly caps how many of your calls even get answered.

Area code is a trust signal, not decoration

A local number in the same area code as the person you're calling gets answered more often than an unfamiliar one. People screen calls from numbers they don't recognize, and a mismatched area code is one of the fastest ways to get filtered before you've said a word. This is a targeting decision, not a technical one, and it's worth making deliberately rather than defaulting to whatever number Twilio's console happens to suggest first.

Regulatory registration isn't optional paperwork

A number carriers have flagged as high-volume or unregistered can get filtered before it ever rings, no matter how good your script is. Depending on the country, this means completing carrier-required registration (A2P 10DLC in the US is the common example) before real volume, not after you notice answer rates dropping and start debugging the wrong layer.

Voice-enabled is a separate checkbox from SMS

Not every Twilio number ships ready for voice by default in every configuration path. Confirm the number is explicitly voice-enabled before wiring it into an AI platform, rather than assuming a number that can send SMS can also carry a call.

Two ways to hand the number to your AI platform

Once you own a voice-enabled, registered number, there are two paths to connect it to an orchestration platform like Vapi or Retell: a one-click import inside the platform's own dashboard, or a manual SIP trunk connection you configure yourself. The one-click import is faster to set up. A SIP trunk gives you more control over authentication and routing, and it's the path this series covers in the next video, because it's also where the fiddliest failure modes live.

Why this matters if you're not the one configuring it

None of this is hard, individually. What's easy to miss is that each of these steps, area code targeting, carrier registration, voice-enablement, the import-vs-trunk decision, is a place a business can quietly lose call volume without any error message pointing at the cause. LeadOro handles this provisioning as part of setting up a client's voice channel, so the number your customers call is already registered, voice-ready, and locally relevant before day one.
